President's Message

As a former Minister of Culture who accompanied La TOHU’s creation at a time when environmental and societal concerns were starting to gain importance, it was with pride and ambition that I accepted, in the fall of 2015, to take the chairmanship of the board of directors. The organization is, without a doubt, a flagship of Montreal’s cultural sector and an essential institution within the Canadian circus world as well as the Saint-Michel district.

La TOHU, a national circus arts scene, also plays a structuring role in its immediate ecosystem. As the reception and interpretation pavilion of Frédéric-Back Park, it assumes a crucial role in environmental animation and education. La TOHU also stimulates employment, promotes togetherness and arouses a sense of pride in the neighborhood’s residents and organizations.

As Chairman of the Board, my role is to support La TOHU’s management in its organizational transformation, in the continuous improvement of its practices, in the consolidation of partnerships and in the sound management of financial and human resources. The strategic planning process that we have recently put in place reflects these principles, while ensuring constant respect for the mission and values of the organization.

I would like to sincerely thank all the directors for the richness and diversity of their contributions, as well as all the financial partners, both public and private, for their unwavering support.

Welcome to La TOHU!

2020-2022 Strategic Planning

During the fall-winter of 2019-20, La TOHU conducted a rigorous strategic planning process involving the board of directors, the management committee and all their teams, as well as a vast majority of La TOHU’s institutional, artistic, educational and financial partners.

Built in collaboration with MCE Conseils, a consulting firm with great expertise in the cultural and social economy sectors, this 2020-2022 strategic plan is structured around three axes:

  • Offer diversification and its marketing which includes the notions of audacity and diversity in the programming, a greater circus presence throughout the territory, an improved customer experience and an increased outreach in Montreal and internationally through more partnerships;
  • Territory occupation and animation which consists in strengthening La TOHU’s roles as Frédéric-Back Park’s reception pavilion, a major contributor to the Cité des arts du cirque, a hub of innovation and citizen participation in Saint-Michel as well as its role as a leader in sustainable development through culture;
  • A mobilized and efficient organization which focuses on organizational issues, particularly human resources and staff engagement; philanthropy and private funding; internal tools and processes and accountability; economic resilience.

As the tools are deployed, a dashboard and performance indicators will be published to measure the strategic plan’s progress. Stay tuned!
